What is Green Washing?
Day #263 of #365 Days of Feng Shui
Green washing is a term used when companies tout that their products are more natural, organic or pure that what they really are. It’s all in the marketing.
Sometimes the lesser active ingredients, which may even be certified organic or plant based, will be highlighted when they advertise the product.
Though may not even make up most of the product.
Colours are also used in the marketing to help boost the illusion that the product is natural. For example, using colours like greens and browns or textures like hessian or photos of the earth.
All these tactics help to trigger you into thinking that the product is healthy and safe.
The product may actually be chemically based with small amounts of plant extracts or organics.
Even products that are certified organic may only make up 70% to 95% of the product.
Leaving it up to the company as to whether they use safe chemicals or not to create a base or use preservatives etc. Here are some tips as to…
How Not to fall for Green Washing
- Get to know the ingredients.
- The first third on the list of ingredients make up most of the product. And will be listed in order of amount. Down to the least amount. Aqua or water is usually the first for a lot of cosmetics.
- If you are unsure of an ingredient it’s time to research it – (a blog post coming soon on how to do that) And if in doubt ask the company. I recently asked a well known natural brand cosmetic company if they source their Palm Oil from sustainable sources and received an email the same day. (Yes they do BTW.)
- And again start to become familiar with the ingredients just as you would with the food you put in your belly.
Your skin is the largest organ of your body, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as your 2nd lung.
And you absorb on average up to 64% of what you put on your skin.
I also just read that you can absorb up to 100% of what you put on your genitalia and armpits! Wow!
So get cracking and get researching!
