How to Use Screens in Feng Shui
Day #186 or #365 Days of Feng Shui
Screens are a wonderful way of creating a space full of flow and nurturing Qi.
Screens have the ability to create a space where Qi can weave in and out and around areas, which helps the energy to nurture your space.
They can also lessen distractions, assist in maintaining your focus and provide supportive and welcoming energy.
Huh? You may be thinking…Just a simple screen?
You see, according to Feng Shui practise placing a screen, in the right place, helps to create spaces with purpose. (partitions in office spaces are a great example of this)
And when a space has a purpose or it’s own function, the energy becomes more nurturing and has the ability to ‘hold space’.
For example, when you are dining, it is recommended for you to be present whilst eating. And when you are present whilst eating it allows your body to absorb the nutrients effectively. Also eating in a space with little distractions helps you to connect and communicate with those you are eating with.
Another example is the living room.
When furniture is arranged in a certain way, a living room can create a space that supports of cohesion, healthy communication and a sense of togetherness.
The screen in this pic (from @empirenewcastle ) has been placed in an open planned area which would essentially be one big room. The screen is being used to separate and create the living and dining room areas, helping to support these two separate living spaces.
By using a screen in this manner the Qi, or energy, is maintained for each space as each space now has it’s own purpose.
And not only do I know this works in theory, but have recently experienced the consequences of trying to function in an open plan living space…
Our living room and dining area is open planned. And since moving here both our young boys find it really difficult to remain seated whilst eating at the table. They seem to become so distracted with what is in the ‘whole’ space (we haven’t partitioned or screened it off yet) because they are able to see the whole space, so even though the TV is turned off they are distracted by it simply because they can see it and ‘know’ they aren’t allowed to watch it or because they can see a toy they have left in the living space etc.
Open planned living can provide you with a sense of freedom and ‘openness’ though can also create a sense of ‘where do I go’ and ‘what-do-I-focus-on-because-there-is-so-much-to-focus-on’.
Using screens to divide some of this space up can help to create a ‘focused’ and more nurtured areas in your space.
Other ways you can use screens…
- at your main entrance to slow the qi down if you walk from your front door straight into your living room.
- behind your sofa if it isn’t against a wall, this creates a supportive energy.
- to separate a sleeping and study space, as seeing your desk from your bed may make you feel tired or drained.Like your work is never done.
- separate dining and kitchen as seeing your kitchen from your table can distract you from your food and make you feel like you need to continue to ‘do’- do the dishes, the cleaning, packing away etc.
P.S. Please share it on your Facebook, Twitter or any other social media site just for the LOVE of it.
