For Day #74 (Detox)
Stainless steel pots and pans.
Using stainless steal pots and pans for cooking is one of the healthiest and safest ways to cook food for you and your family.
Stainless steel obviously does not contain chemicals and is not porous; so will not absorb or hold bacteria etc.
There are pots and pans that are advised to avoid for health reasons.
Aluminium and copper pots can leach their metals into your food. Aluminium has been linked to Alzheimer’s and copper poisoning from the use of copper pots.
Thankfully most of this type of cookware has been eliminated from sale, but in case you may be using your grandmother’s pots and pans for nostalgia or you have purchased old pots from a 2nd hand store it is best to check them out and not use them.
Non-stick products though have saturated the market place. I have yet to find a frying pan without non stick. Teflon has been a rather new introduction to ease your cooking woes. But according to US studies the chemical PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) which is used in Teflon products have been found in the blood of 90% of Americans!
This chemical has been recognised as a carcinogen and so it’s really recommended not to use non stick for cooking (Bijlsma 2012 pg 274 Healthy Home, Healthy Family)
The company that makes Teflon has promised to eliminate this chemical from their products and are said to do this by 2015. Though they have also known of this possible health risk since the 1990’s and to my knowledge are not required by law to eliminate it or disclose the ingredients of their products.
So stainless steel is one of the safest and healthiest ways to cook.
