Day #60 (Detox)
Your bottles of perfumes can be so pretty and the process of buying and using them; so luxurious… but you may wish to wonder ‘what am I spraying on my body?’
Fragrances and perfumes are basically a chemical cocktail.
There can be up to 4000 individual chemicals just to make one fragrance product. And scientists are unsure of the synergistic effects they may have on our health.
It’s kinda horrifying especially when manufacturers are not obliged to list the ingredients what is in the fragrance due to trade secrets.
Any product with ‘fragrance’ an ingredient is one to avoid.
Unfortunately they are not only perfumes, but to shampoos, moisturisers, body washes and many, many other personal care products including baby care products.
Fragrances are one of the top 5 allergens in the world and can cause skin reactions and asthma for those susceptible and can contain chemicals linked to endocrine, hormone disruptors and carcinogens.(Bijlsma 2011)
Many of the fragrances that are put into commercial personal care products are simply put in there to mask the terrible smell of the other chemicals.
Some of the reactions people can get from fragrances are many and varied. They range from sleep disturbances to watery eyes, hyperactivity to depression along with skin reactions, lung irritation and much more.
There are reports that phthalates which are in some fragrances can contribute to hormonal disruption, birth defects and infertility. Be careful what is written on the label as ‘organic’ doesn’t necessarily mean chemical free.
Opting for products that are natural and organic is the best option, especially for children. Essential oils are a great alternative.
There will be some blog posts coming soon of safe and certified natural personal care products so stay tuned.
