Day #34 [Detox]
Plastics in your Food.
Wanting to lower your chemical load?
Another simple way to do this is to swap your plastic food containers for glass, stainless steal or ceramic containers.
Plastics should never be used to hold your left overs.
Especially more so if you want to keep your organic food…. organic.
The chemicals used to create these containers leach into your food on contact, but even more so if you heat, freeze or place warm food into them. These chemicals have the potential to disrupt hormones and increase breast cancer cells (Soto et al, 1991) and linked to other health related issues such as diabetes and heart disease.
There are many different plastics out there which are usually differentiated by their recycle number and it can get confusing. If you are still wanting to use plastics; #2,#4 and most #5 recycling numbers are known to be the ‘safer’ plastics. Though it is still recommended not to heat or freeze foods in these. And avoid plastics with no recycle number as these plastics have not been classified.
The easier, safest and healthiest option is to avoid plastic containers all together and use glass, stainless steal or non glazed ceramics.
More information re products and plastics coming in the weeks to come.
