I have been doing a lot of uncovering, decluttering and clearing lately.
I started with my wardrobe on the weekend and came across the jacket.
The ultimate in retro, hippy, red suede jacket.
I have held onto this jacket tightly which has been around since way before I was born. Everytime I looked at it, it radiated a sense of chic and ultimate in cool.
This jacket was my mum’s and she loved the jacket and used to tell me how she would love wearing it with a black skivvy, jeans and knee-high black boots in the 60’s! Then in my early twenties I started wearing the jacket.
It made me feel like I was super cool, different, unconventional and ‘unique’. All the qualities I wanted to be.
Mum also told me when I was younger, that she was told by the store owner from where she bought the jacket, that there were only 100 of them made and 20 of them where accidentally shipped to Australia, the rest went to the U.S. So this jacket was not only cool, it was special… a limited edition! This jacket had a story.
I LOVED this jacket.
I suddenly realised I had the jacket sitting in my cupboard for about 20 yrs without it being worn. Occasionally I would look at it and say to myself – ‘So cool’ – and then hang it back into the wardrobe and choose another item. There was no way I was letting this gem go. Even though I never wore it. Even though no one else saw it and appreciated it. It was there… in my closet… my secret little jacket loaded energetically with memories and a feeling this jacket could make me feel ‘cool’ again one day.
To be honest it really is not my style anymore. Even though I wore the jacket 20years ago on occassion, I never really wore it again. And now being older it doesn’t really fit me and well, it is just not me.
So on my decluttering rampage I decided I needed to truly honour my ‘letting go’ ritual. I needed to let go of the jacket. I would give the jacket away to someone who I feel would really love it and wear it! This jacket can’t stay in the cupboard any longer. It needs to be seen and it needs to be on someone who will honour it.
So I called my mum just to double-check it was ‘ok’ to give it away.
Me – ‘Mum, you know the jacket with the mushrooms?’
Mum – ‘Oh do you still have that? I was only thinking about it the other day’
Me – ‘ Do you mind if I give it to someone who I think would really love it and actually wear it?’
Mum – ‘Oh, no I don’t mind’
Me – ‘Because I know you love it and it has that story attached to how there is only a few of them here…’
Mum – ‘ What? What story?’
Me – ‘You know the one about how they accidentally shipped x amount of these jackets to Australia, so there is only a few of these that were ever here. ‘
Mum – ‘No dear, I don’t know what you’re talking about.’
Me – ‘Well you told me the story!’
Mum – ‘ Oh did I? No, I don’t remember that’.
Me – ‘ Oh, well that is what I remember you telling me from when I was little. Isn’t that funny?’
And with that short conversation I realised the amount of energy that jacket had been holding. The energy I had created for that jacket. And in an instant it suddenly cleared for me.
I had built up the energy of this jacket to a point that it almost had a life of its own.
It’s a wonder I didn’t give it a name! I am even writing a blog post about it!
But now it is free to go to someone else who will create their own history with it. It is no longer a legacy of cool I must carry on for years to come. It no longer contains an energy that I have built up over my whole life time! (OMG I have just realised this! It has been over 40 years of believing this jacket held ‘something’) And even though I provide Space Clearing services and understand how antiques and spaces hold memory, I didn’t realise how much energy I had created about this jacket.
I will be further clearing this jacket of my memories in a little ritual with sage and a few cord cutting techniques and sending it on its merry way. And opening up the space for myself to allow new energy to enter, new shifts, new fresh possibilities and no more hiding stuff in my closet!
Are you holding onto to ‘stuff’ just because of a story?
Do you have things in your cupboards that you are too attached to throw away?
What really are you holding onto?
What really do you need to have in your life?
Decluttering such a freeing process and even though I have decluttered my closet many times over, it is only now that I realise I need to let this jacket go in order to receive the new.
