Are you Living in a Plastic Bag?
Day#251 of #365 Days of Feng Shui
My teacher Nicole Bijlsma, a building biologist amongst other amazing things, opened my eyes to how new homes and buildings are becoming like toxic containers.
With growing concerns due to the increase of green house gases in our environment, new homes are now having to adhere to building legislations making them more energy efficient.
These new energy efficient homes are built to hold in heat and coolness which is done by heavy insulation and sealing the building up.
This means the buildings become almost air tight, not allowing the home to breathe.
“Our buildings are our third skin. Sealing them in the name of ‘energy efficiency’ is synonymous to living in a plastic bag”– Nicole Bijlsma (Healthy Home, Healthy Family, 2012 pg 13)
When your home is sealed problems occur with ventilation, mould can start to grow, off-gassing of your furnishings chemicals aren’t able to escape and fatigue and illness can occur.
If you look at an older home there will be air vents up near the ceiling to allow stale air and heat to escape. These help the home to breathe, toxins to escape and air to circulate through the space.
New natural building techniques are great alternative, energy saving, cost and healthy.
If you are pondering building a new home I highly recommend consulting a building biologist to ensure your home is healthy for you and your family.
