So I decided to write one of those 12 things you didn’t know about me.
I grew up in a 100 yr old house on a dirt road on a lake. We didn’t have a street address or number… ‘The Waterfront’ was our address. We went swimming before school sometimes in summer, caught crabs and cockles, had jelly fish fights and ate from our well planted garden of fruit trees and mint. I loved that house. This tree was our playground, just up the dirt road from our home.
I eat raw potato. Ever since I was a kid my brother and I always ate raw potato when my mum was cooking. I still eat it if I am cutting it up. My kids won’t touch it!
I hate flying! Really… very much! I was ok until I took a Garuda flight and we started dropping from the sky. I am here and safe and everything… but I really don’t like flying.
I have been a helper of one of the biggest whale saves in the southern hemisphere. We were the first ones in the water with the whales. There were about 5 people per whale and we had to hold them in the water to get their sonar working again. I always seemed to get the head and they always blessed me with their fishy breath by blowing in my face from their blowholes. Amazing experience!
I sometimes sing and play guitar… it usually happens on new years eve or in our shed at night. I forget how much I love and miss it sometimes. Note to self: more creative expression incorporated into daily life is needed.
I was the unofficial official celebrant for my friends wedding. I was unofficial because our government does not recognise same sex marriages. And I was official because everyone there officially recognised two people joining together in union. It was official for us. It was an honour to be the person that read their vows to them and help hold the space for a sacred and heart based ceremony.
I have seen, felt, talked to and been visited by spirits ever since I can remember. Sometimes they scare the pants off me, other times they reassure me and some are wanting assistance to move on… others don’t like me because I can move them on. When I was a child I used to get up and turn on all the lights in the house at night to stop them from scaring me in my sleep. I yell at them if they wake me up and then I scare my partner Harry. Some just come to say hello.
I used to restore antique furniture for the high-end of the Sydney market. I have restored Kerry Packers chest and desk. I also completed one year cabinet making apprenticeship after a few years of restoring, soon knew cabinetmaking was not my thing. I love restoring and still do it when I have time and have restored much of our own furniture.
I don’t eat meat and haven’t for approximately 20 years. Though I do eat fish and seafood – all that time living on the lake!
I lived in England for four years and 3 days. I managed the best damn health food shop on the planet and became the best target budget beater out of 44 stores across England. I loved that job.
I have a BA in Visual Arts and majored in printmaking – etching and lithography. It is where I first learnt and worked with the energy of symbology and discovered how art can be healing. My major works helped me change my perspective and provided life changing healing around the death of my father. I am only just returning to art after 15ish years and am loving it!
I met my partner Harry at a pub 9 years ago and he doubled me home on his bicycle handle bars. We were engaged 3 months after we met, though have never officially married. Harry also has a BA in Visual Arts and he, like me, has ditched his ‘job that he thought was supposed to be doing’ to focus on his passion, his art. He is now a full- time tattoo artist. We have two children Orlando and Rafael. They are not named after any celebrities or sports stars! They are good Latino names 🙂 Harry’s family are Chilean and we will be visiting Chile when our boys get a little older.
Hope that created a bit of a back drop to some of what I have done in my life so far. Certainly not everything but a few snippets may help you see a picture.
